The archive hopes to hold another videotaping session this summer. In 1991, the archive videotaped a half-dozen women reminiscing about the early lesbian bars. To buy some protection for the bar and its patrons, lesbian bar owners often paid off police officers, either with cash or sex or both. As a result, people didn’t keep things that might associate them with those bars. Before the Stonewall riots, which are credited as the single most important moment leading to the gay liberation movement, police used to routinely raid gay and lesbian bars. WEHOville consulted with the archive to learn more about some of the early lesbian bars in the area.Īngela Brinskele, the archive’s communication director, said that early records of lesbian bars are sketchy. The June Mazer Lesbian Archives, located at 626 Robertson Blvd., adjacent to West Hollywood Park, maintains an extensive collection of lesbian-related information from across the nation. The Palms may be the only lesbian bar in West Hollywood and the oldest continually operating lesbian bar in the Los Angeles area but it is far from the first lesbian bar in the area. (Photo courtesy of the June Mazer Lesbian Archives) The photo is also notable because the women are freely posing, which was rare during a time of police harassment. Until this photo was donated to the Mazer Lesbian Archives, no LGBT historian had ever heard of the Green Door. PS: You may have noticed that I did not put wine on the list.An August 1955 photo shows lesbian patrons posing inside the Green Door bar, on Lankershim Blvd. Please leave a comment (and like!) explaining your favorite drinks and why you love, love, love them so much! Now, I understand that everyone, gay or straight (or anywhere in between), has their own favorite.

They’re elegant, pretty, diverse, and full of alcohol. Goes great with some guacamole!Įither classic or flavored, martinis are every gay man’s go-to. Served either on the rocks or frozen, most gay men can attest to this staple drink, even if it is more of a dinnertime libation. It is also simple to make on your own!įor the gay seeking something heavier, tarter, and friskier.
This drink is so popularized among homosexuals, bartenders should basically have them pre-made by 5pm. The infamous cosmo – legendary among the LGBT crowd and a staple among the gay male scene. (It also contains minimal calories, for the weight-conscious gay.) If you don’t like orange, Stoli makes a variety of other flavored vodkas or you can skip down the list.Īnother easy and cheap alternative, the gin & tonic is a classic choice in the “scene.” I find this to be ordered more among the mature crowd. Oh, and you can barely taste the alcohol (unless it is all Stoli, which is more commonly the case). One of my favorites! Stoli-O and Sprite® is a delicious and cheap order that is tough to screw up.
Most commonly made with Canadian whiskey, DeKuyper® Sour Apple Pucker schnapps, and cranberry juice – tastes just like an apple! …Kind of… Whether it’s for the worse or better, I cannot attest. Though you won’t find it made with Crown Royal® in most establishments, this shot will certainly turn your party. Order with caution!ĭoes this even need an explanation? Five liqueurs and a splash of Coke… What a recipe for the gods! Most commonly made with rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, this cocktail is only for the brave and is quite easily screwed up by an untalented bartender. Switching liqueur gears for a second, the infamous Manhattan is a sure-fire way to get your groove going. Now, you’re probably thinking, “that’s not totally gay.” I must agree with you – however, it goes without a doubt that those gays who choose to forego the Redbull will often choose the splash of pink to masks the taste of rubbing alcohol from their mixed beverage. How do we do it? Caffeine in our cocktails! (And every other chemical that gives Redbull its wings.) For example, in Philadelphia the last club closes around 4am, and even that is often not enough to satisfy our needs.
It goes without saying that we gays are notorious for partying until the asscrack of dawn. Normally I would refrain from generalization, but I find these trends hold true a significant amount of the time.īelow I have listed the 10 most popular alcoholic drinks ordered by gay men. (By “enjoyable,” I really mean destructive.) Furthermore, each concoction serves quite a unique purpose, and could even mean the difference in what type of gay man you are.
Granted, we are open to trying new things, but there exist a choice amount of staple drinks that we find most enjoyable. If you’ve ever been out in LGBT nightlife, chances are you have noticed there are a few trending drinks floating about in the hands of most gay men.
